Dear Students, Parents & Guardians,

I hope you are all well and enjoying the last month of summer vacation. I am looking forward to a new and exciting school year and I hope that you all feel the same way and come back to school refreshed, energized and excited. The staff at the high school is working hard to continue to improve our school and produce graduates who are prepared to excel in the next phase of life, whatever that might be.

With that in mind, we are asking for your help in making the upcoming school year a successful one. We recognize that, when school starts in September, the weather is still summer-like and our attire reflects that. Please take a moment to ensure that your child wears appropriate clothing to school, such as making sure no undergarments or midriffs are visible. We just want to ensure that the learning environment is conducive to all.

Secondly, we encourage all of our students to participate in after school activities whenever possible. This includes staying with a teacher, joining a club, playing a sport, or staying to support your peers at athletic events, to name a few. It is important to understand that students must have a reason for staying after school and they must be supervised at all times. Students are not permitted to be in the building after school unless supervised.

We are continuing to offer several new, elective classes in various departments. It’s not too late to enroll in one of them so I encourage you to contact your counselor for more information on these new course offerings. Please take advantage of the many opportunities that you have to better help you excel academically and enjoy the high school experience. With that in mind, be aware that you will be able to have a maximum of one study hall on your schedule. We want you to experience a wide variety of classes.

9th Grade Orientation: On Thursday, August 31st, Rondout Valley High School will host 9th Grade Orientation at the high school from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.  

  • Incoming freshmen are invited to drop in during this time.  The orientation will provide freshmen with the opportunity to access their lockers, learn where their classes will be held, and meet teachers, students, and administrators. Student peer leaders from the Newcomers Uplifted Program, a program to help 9th grade students transition to high school, will also be on hand to take freshmen and parents on a tour of the school.

First Day of School and Bussing: The school year begins on Wednesday, September 6, 2017.  The Career and Technical programs will begin on September 6th.  Students will report to school by 7:40 and to their first block class at 7:55 A.M. We have provided a bit of time in the schedule before classes start to take care of personal concerns  (i.e. check in with a teacher, get breakfast, hand in a bus pass, etc.). Please check the district website at for transportation information. Questions regarding transportation should be directed to the Transportation Department at 687-2400, Ext. 4815. 

Student Schedules: Your updated schedule from the Counseling Office is enclosed.  Please check it carefully.  Please note the locker number and combination on your schedule.  If you wish to make any changes to your schedule, please call the Counseling Office (687-2400 ext. 4213 or 4214) and set up an appointment before the beginning of the school year.   Once the school year begins, opportunities to change schedules will be extremely limited.

  • Mrs. Holly Miller – Grades 9 (G-Q); 10-12 last name beginning with G - N

  • Mr. Jody Hoffman – Grades 9 (R-Z); 10-12 last name beginning with O – Z
  • Mrs. Megan Marquis -   Student Assistance Counselor

Student Driving - Seniors, if you have not returned your driving application contract forms you may do so at the Assistant Principal’s Office.  All vehicles must be registered for safety purposes.  Parking permits are distributed on a first come, first served basis.  Parking will be made available to seniors first.  Junior applications may be considered at a later date. Please remember that driving and parking on campus is a privilege that is earned and may be lost. Please be sure to read the updated guidelines which are available in the Assistant Principals Office.

Career and Technical Program (B.O.C.E.S.) Lunch: Students participating in the Career and Technical (B.O.C.E.S.) Program will eat lunch at Rondout.  We adjusted our schedule to provide time for lunch here at Rondout.

Student Handbook:  Upon their arrival, all high school students will receive a handbook.  The handbook will also be posted to our website.  Teachers and administrators will take time to go over the handbook to ensure all students understand our expectations.  Parents, please take time to review the handbook with your child in order to help us create a safe, fun school environment as well as one that is focused on student learning.  There are several pages in the book that require parent/guardian signatures.
